WASHINGTON (AP) - The Latest on the investigation of the shooting of a Republican lawmaker and others at a baseball practice last week (all times local):

5 p.m.

U2 lead singer Bono has met with members of Rep. Steve Scalise’s staff and signed a card wishing the congressman a speedy recovery.

Scalise was grievously injured when a gunman opened fire at a Republican baseball practice last Wednesday, injuring several people. The congressman is in fair condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after a bullet struck his hip.

U2 performed in the Washington, D.C., area Tuesday night and Bono was at the Capitol on Wednesday, meeting with Republicans and Democrats. He was pressing for Congress to fully fund the foreign aid budget for next year despite deep cuts proposed by President Donald Trump.

That’s according to the statement from the One Campaign. Bono is a co-founder of the organization.

The Republican congressman shot last week at a baseball practice is making good progress and has been upgraded to fair condition.

That’s the word from MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The hospital issued a statement on Wednesday saying Rep. Steve Scalise, 51, of Louisiana is “beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation.”

The Louisiana Republican has undergone several surgeries since he was shot last week. Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman.

The Majority Whip was struck in the hip and the bullet shattered blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. Doctors said he had arrived at the hospital last Wednesday at imminent risk of death.

House Speaker Paul Ryan says the congressman grievously injured in last week’s shooting at a Republican baseball practice is “on the road to recovery” but it will take some time.

Ryan made the comments to reporters Wednesday morning. Members of the House were wearing purple-and-gold fleur-de-lis lapel stickers, a familiar symbol in Louisiana - Rep. Steve Scalise’s home state.

The Majority Whip remains in serious condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after a gunman opened fire at the practice in Alexandria, Virginia, a week ago. Scalise, 51, was struck in the hip and the bullet shattered blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. Doctors said he had arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death.

The FBI says a gunman acted alone when he shot and wounded a top House Republican and four other people on a northern Virginia baseball field.

Tim Slater, the special agent in charge of the Washington FBI office, also said during a news conference Wednesday that James T. Hodgkinson did not have any ties to terrorism.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip, was gravely wounded in the shooting last week. He has undergone several surgeries and remains hospitalized. His condition has been upgraded to serious.

Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman, who turned out to be an unemployed home inspector with a deep animus toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans.
