VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A former convict is suing the Virginia Beach Jail and the state Department of Corrections for allegedly jailing him for 77 days longer than his sentence required.
The Virginian-Pilot reports the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed the lawsuit Monday on behalf of John Louis Freeman Sr. The lawsuit alleges Freeman didn’t receive full credit for jail time served following his arrest in Massachusetts for charges in Virginia. Freeman has two court orders that recognize the time served.
In 2014, Freeman was sentenced to 957 days in jail. He served 1,034 days in jails in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Massachusetts.
Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hieatt said in a statement that the state didn’t notify the jail of Freeman’s modified court-ordered release date.
