SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The body of a 20-year-old man has been recovered from the American River in Northern California.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/2rR4Fek ) the man disappeared Tuesday while swimming near the Forest Hills Bridge.

State parks rangers, along with a California Highway Patrol helicopter and the Placer County sheriff’s dive team searched the area where the man had been swimming with five friends.

Mike Howard, Auburn sector superintendent for California State Parks, says the helicopter crew located the man’s body about 300 yards (274 meters) downstream from where he was swimming.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

Howard cautioned people against trying to swim across the river.
