PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lawmakers in Rhode Island have delayed votes on two bills that would expand disability pensions for first responders.
WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2swuD4a ) the House Labor Committee canceled votes on the two pieces of legislation that were scheduled for Wednesday. House spokesman Larry Berman says both bills are still under review.
The first bill would change disability pensions to include illnesses sustained on duty for police officers and firefighters. Only injuries are covered under current disability pension policies.
The second measure would presume firefighters suffering from hypertension contracted the disease while working, which would make them eligible for a disability pension.
Critics say the bills could hurt municipalities struggling to support the expanded pensions.
Supporters say the changes are relatively minor and backed by scientific studies.
