PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine island residents are concerned that development on the mainland will lead to a loss of parking spaces in ferry terminals - which they say could threaten the sustainability of island communities.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2srVBtr ) increased development pressure alongside Portland’s waterfront has reignited the concern for island residents in the Casco Bay. Residents of the islands often commute to Portland for jobs, school, athletics and social events. Islanders also shop on the mainland for a variety of items.
The Portland City Council says they will begin looking at long-term solutions over the summer. The city says 270 island residents had decals allowing them to park in designated free spots last year.
