AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Republican governor says he’ll veto any budget deal that “hurts Maine” even if he gets it at the eleventh hour.
A budget is due June 30.
Gov. Paul LePage on a Tuesday radio show said he doesn’t think there will be a government shutdown because of the political fallout for Democrats.
But he said his administration will begin determining the most essential government services.
Legislative leaders are set to discuss the budget Tuesday afternoon after a six-member group of special budget negotiators failed to break an impasse over education funding last week.
LePage said he wants support for education proposals like a statewide teacher’s contract and money for school consolidation efforts.
The governor also wants support for reforming a tree growth tax break and taxing land held in trusts.
