PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton is pointing to Arizona’s extreme heat and drought issues in criticizing President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the landmark Paris climate accord.
Trump announced Thursday he was pulling the U.S. out of the global pact to reduce earth-warming gases and combat climate change.
The mayor says Trump’s decision is an indicator he is willing to sacrifice the health and safety of people across the nation and specifically residents of the state. Stanton says climate change leaves Arizonans dramatically affected by record-breaking average temperatures every year. He also says climate change is directly related to the state’s drought and increased forest fires.
Stanton says he will join other mayors across the U.S. in honoring the agreement and take steps to fight climate change in Phoenix.
