ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York City officials say they’ll continue critical water releases into the Delaware River despite the expiration of a management plan that New Jersey disputes.
The plan dictating how the Delaware’s water is shared between New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware expired this week after New Jersey refused to sign it. That state wants a bigger share of the water.
An older plan that took effect with the expiration sets far lower levels for water releases from three city reservoirs that serve 9 million residents. That could harm downstream trout and recreation.
But officials from New York City, New York state, Pennsylvania and Delaware said Thursday they’ve signed an agreement for the city to keep releasing enough water for fish, recreation and flood and drought protection while a new plan is being negotiated.
