BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore health officials say they are rationing their distribution of a drug used to counter opioid overdoses.
The Baltimore Sun reports (https://bitly.is/1g3AhR6 ) that the city is running low on the overdose reversal drug naloxone.
City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said demand for naloxone has increased significantly because of the higher use of opioids like prescription pain pills, heroin and fentanyl.
She said she does not have enough doses to give to everyone who is requesting them. Wen said the city is limiting its distribution of naloxone to high risk individuals.
Baltimore has about 4,000 doses left until next May. There are an estimated 21,000 active heroin users in the city.
