ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he’s not optimistic that lawmakers will reach a deal to extend Mayor Bill de Blasio’s control over New York City schools.

The Democratic governor told reporters on a conference call Friday that while he supports extending mayoral control of schools, he’s not convinced one can pass before the legislative session ends next week.

The 2002 policy giving the mayor control of city schools expires this month.

Assembly Democrats support a multi-year extension. Senate Republicans want to include greater assistance for charter schools.

Lawmakers could return to Albany for a special session if they fail to reach a deal next week.

Cuomo also says he doubts lawmakers will pass legislation loosening the statute of limitations for criminal and civil child sex abuse cases.
