NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Louisiana Legislature and a Catholic charitable fraternity have organized blood drives for U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise.

The House majority whip is in critical condition after being shot this week during practice for a charity baseball game.

The Legislature’s blood drive is Friday at the Capitol.

The Knights of Columbus says in an email that people anywhere can give blood at their local blood center or hospital and say it’s “replenishment” for Scalise.

A Louisiana State University fraternity brother organized the Catholic group’s drive. Adrian Bruneau (BROO’-noh) says he’s known Scalise for about 25 years and everyone he knows is frustrated and wants to help.

Knights of Columbus diocesan coordinator Mark Carver says he sent Bruneau’s email up the ladder in hopes of a national effort, but hasn’t heard back.
