NEW YORK (AP) - A prosecutor says New York City has settled a racial discrimination lawsuit against the Department of Transportation.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said Thursday that supervisors in the department had discriminated against minorities for nearly a decade.
He says they tolerated the use of racial epithets and excluded minorities from preferred assignments and promotions.
As a result of the settlement, 14 employees will be getting back pay and compensatory damages ranging from $60,000 to over $168,000.
Prosecutors said the individual who first notified the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission of the discrimination will receive $150,000. The settlement requires the city to take steps to comply with anti-discrimination laws when it promotes employees.
City law office spokesman Nick Paolucci said the city fully cooperated to reach a fair resolution.
