MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says police have increased their presence in the Wisconsin Capitol building after a shooting at a congressional baseball practice outside of Washington.
Vos, a Republican, opened a Wednesday floor session by calling the shooting an ugly tragedy. He said he spoke with Capitol Police and told members they’ll notice a heightened police presence in the building but there’s been no threats.
Democratic Minority Leader Peter Barca told reporters lawmakers need to consider more security. Vos told reporters the Capitol should be open, legislators are safe and he doesn’t want a guard following him around all day.
Asked if he feels safer because the Assembly allows concealed weapons in the chamber, Vos said the next-best option to police is someone else who can respond to an attack.
