GREENVILLE, Texas (AP) - A state district judge has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee the case of a Northeast Texas district attorney who authorities say was driving a car that struck and fatally injured an 87-year-old crossing guard.

Authorities said in a statement Wednesday that Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper will lead the investigation into the incident involving Noble Walker, who’s the district attorney in adjacent Hunt County, where the accident occurred.

Judge B. Michael Chitty, who was previously named a special judge in the case, appointed Culpepper to determine whether charges should be filed.

Investigators say Walker’s vehicle struck Christine Sandlin on March 29 while she was in a crosswalk near a Greenville elementary school. Sandlin died April 11.

Walker previously told WFAA-TV he couldn’t “express enough how deeply saddened and sorry” he was.
