JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a permit to Dominion Energy for a proposed transmission line.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/2saAFaj ) the corps issued a provisional proffered permit Monday. The proposed 500-kilovolt line will be built across the James River and near Historic Jamestown.

Dominion says the line will ensure reliability on the peninsula following the planned closure of coal-fire units at the Yorktown Power Station.

Preservation Virginia CEO Elizabeth Kostelny says there are alternatives that would deliver power to the peninsula and preserve irreplaceable national assets.

Norfolk district corps commander Col. Jason E. Kelly says the corps is committed to reaching a decision that accounts for the environmental and historical impact.

The permit hinges on additional approval from groups such as the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
