TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A man has been convicted of fatally stabbing a Florida convenience store clerk.

The Tampa Bay Times (https://goo.gl/XetF7m ) reports that 24-year-old Lawrence Bongiovanni was found guilty Tuesday of murder and armed robbery. He faces a mandatory life sentence. Prosecutors had initially sought the death penalty but changed their minds, citing Bongiovanni’s history of mental illness.

Authorities say Bongiovanni stabbed 54-year-old Kenneth Redding more than 30 times at a Riverview 7-Eleven store in July 2013. Bongiovanni then grabbed a roll of lottery tickets and ran off.

Surveillance video caught the attack.
