HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg leaders are setting a hiring freeze in city government until the new mayor takes office.
State Rep. Toby Barker was elected to the city’s top job last week, defeating four-term Mayor Johnny DuPree. Barker’s four-year term begins July 1.
The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/2sY8dsd ) that City Council members voted 4-0 Monday to set the hiring freeze, which includes a ban on transferring city employees from one department to another. One member was absent.
Council president Carter Carroll says the temporary restrictions on hires and transfers will give Barker more flexibility as he begins a new administration.
