FALMOUTH, Maine (AP) - Gov. Paul LePage has authorized a town’s flags be flown at half-staff to honor a fallen Navy SEAL.
Thirty-eight-year-old Senior Chief Petty Officer Kyle Milliken was being buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday. Flags in Falmouth, Milliken’s hometown, were flying at half-staff.
The Department of Defense says Milliken was killed during an operation against the al-Qaida affiliated terrorist group al-Shabab May 5. Officials say Milliken was part of a SEAL group supporting Somali National Army soldiers near Mogadishu.
Milliken is the first American service member killed in action in Somalia since 1993.
Milliken grew up in Falmouth before joining Navy in 2002. He has been awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his bravery.
The serviceman is survived by his wife, two children, a brother and his parents.
