The NBA’s biggest superstar won’t compete in the newly added 3-on-3 basketball in the 2020 Olympics.
LeBron James told reporters Sunday he’s more of a “5-on-5” guy, but said the addition was great for basketball.
The International Olympic Committee announced the news Friday. It is unclear whether pros will be allowed to participate like the 5-on-5 portion in the Olympics.
The rules will also be slightly different than normal, with baskets being worth one point and two for longer shots. The games will also be played in the half court with a 12 second shot clock and teams having to clear the ball above the arc before each possession.
“For us to be able to add another category to the Olympics, another basketball category, I think it’s pretty great,” James said.
James has won two gold medals with Team USA in 2008 and 2012. He also has a bronze medal from the 2004 Olympics in Greece.
James didn’t participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics and is unlikely to play in the 2020 games in Tokyo.
