NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A group of employees in a suburban New Orleans city have filed a lawsuit because they are prohibited from taking part in political activity.
The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2sUjb22 ) the federal suit was filed against the city of Kenner, Mayor Ben Zahn and Police Chief Michael Glaser. It was filed June 1 in New Orleans.
At issue is a charter amendment passed in 2012 prohibiting political activity by “unclassified” employees. Those are employees who serve at the pleasure of elected officials and who don’t have civil service law protection.
Kenner Council member Keith Reynaud (RAY’-noh) backed the amendment. He said he wanted to make sure the city has an apolitical workforce.
Scott Sternberg is the attorney who represents the employees. He said the prohibition violates employee’s free speech rights.
