PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The mayor of Maine’s largest city is joining a group of U.S. mayors that supports the Paris climate agreement.

Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling says he’s joining the “Climate Mayors” group of more than 200 mayors around the country. The network’s led by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

A spokeswoman for Portland says the group is working to improve local efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports federal and global policies to confront climate change.

The mayors recently sent a letter to President Donald Trump opposing his position on climate change. Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris accord this month.

Strimling’s also working with the City Council to sponsor an item in support of the Paris agreement. The council could act on the proposal on June 19.
