OPINION:
Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their two kids have a new home — an $8.1 million dwelling, the same one they’ve been renting in Washington, D.C., these past few months.
The fat cat’s come home to roost.
After years and years of paying lip service to the utter detestability of Wall Street types, big bankers, financial wheelers and dealers and yes, the rich and wealthy of the nation who just don’t ever seem to pay their fair shares — Obama’s embraced his own inner capitalistic greed. The little people be danged.
It’s an 8,200-square-foot home he’s living in now, the same once owned by Bill Clinton’s press secretary, Joe Lockhart.
“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property,” Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for the family, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
And all the former socialist Obama admirers go: Yes, a home — but a mansion?
Oh you silly, silly socialists. One needs a mansion with many rooms to hide from hypocrisy.
Besides, this isn’t the Obama family’s only home. They still have their digs back in Chicago in the South Side Kenwood community — a sort of home away from home, when they want to get back to their roots and schmooze with the little people.
When they want to get outside the insufferable atmosphere of high-brow D.C. politics and elitism that they claimed for so many years disgusted them — when daughter Sasha graduates the high-brow, elite Sidwell Friends school she currently attends.
Nobody’s really surprised the Obamas have chosen to stay in the nation’s capital. Obama himself announced he would be hanging around, helping out with the anti-President Donald Trump messaging and such — though he put it far less bluntly and honestly, of course. Nobody’s really surprised the Obamas, after all these years of denouncing America’s upper class, have moved so quickly and seamlessly into upper class living.
But what gnaws and nags is the hypocrisy of it all — the eight years of Obama’s scolding and chiding and arrogant put-downs of the capitalistic way of life so precious to most in America, and the quick turn-around embrace of self-wealth and elitism. It’s hypocrisy and hubris. Seeing it otherwise is simply taking a deep drink of Kool-Aid.
