OPINION:
The long years in charge of the European Union’s economic and political powerhouse are showing in German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s increasing lack of judgment at key moments.
(“Trump pushes back on Merkel regarding trade, NATO: ’Very bad for U.S.,’” Web, May 30). Certainly President Trump’s request that NATO members pay their fair share of costs and his refusal to endorse the grossly overhyped Paris Agreement on climate change didn’t merit her petulant overreaction.
Then her infantile, Obama-esque, “Yes-We-Can”-style grandstanding on the admission of refugees created mayhem in the EU in general and the Balkans in particular.
But above all, Ms. Merkel’s contemptuous treatment of former British Prime Minister David Cameron and her sending Mr. Cameron home without the merest trace of a fig leaf means that she cannot entirely escape blame for the Brexit disaster.
