Jim Carrey told Entertainment Weekly that nothing should be off limits for comedians who attack President Donald Trump because lines of decorum are “not real.”
Hollywood writer Kathy Griffin faced a wave of backlash this week after unveiling an “art” project involving the president’s decapitated head in her hands. She lost her annual New Year’s Eve job with CNN over the ensuing outrage, but Mr. Carrey said Wednesday night that it was her duty to attack Mr. Trump.
“I think it is the job of a comedian to cross the line at all times — because that line is not real,” Mr. Carrey told ET while promoting “I’m Dying Up Here,” a Showtime special he executive produced. “If you step out into that spotlight and you’re doing the crazy things that [Trump is] doing — we’re the last line of defense. And really, the comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing. It’s impossible to get away from it.”
Mr. Carrey did not give specifics on the “crazy things” he finds objectionable.
The former “Dumb and Dumber” star then recounted a dream he had with the president where the two men were on a golf course.
“I was standing beside him with a club in my hand, and I was considering my options when I suddenly woke up,” the actor said. “It was one of those dreams where you just want to get back to sleep so you can finish it, you know?”

“I’m Dying up Here” premieres at 10 p.m. (EDT) Sunday on Showtime.
