WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A proposed Massachusetts Democratic Party platform calls for a single-payer health care system, free tuition at the state’s public colleges and universities, and a $15 per hour minimum wage.
More than 5,000 delegates are expected to vote on the platform during the state party’s issues convention in Worcester on Saturday.
Party leaders say it’s the largest number of delegates to gather for a convention in a non-election year and reflects a new level of energy among Democrats following the election of Republican President Donald Trump.
The draft platform released Thursday lists a broad array of goals around health care, education, income equality and climate change.
Without providing specifics, it demands a government-sponsored health care system, similar to Medicare, providing insurance to all residents, and “free, high-quality public education from preschool through college.”
