DETROIT (AP) - A $625,000 pilot program will open 16 Detroit public schools as Summer Fun Centers.

Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti announced Thursday that the program could become a long-term strategy following past closures of city recreation centers.

The five-week program starts Monday and is open to children ages 6 to 17. They will have access to indoor and outdoor athletic equipment, arts and crafts, and media centers. Summer Fun Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will provide three meals throughout the day to participants.

The city currently operates 11 full-time recreation centers. Funding cuts forced Detroit to close 16 recreation centers from 2006-2013.
