Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon failed Thursday to have enough fan votes to earn the last roster spot on the National League All-Star team.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Justin Turner instead gets the spot as Rendon finished third in votes.
The Nationals ran a #VoteRendon campaign, which involved Katie Ledecky and Bradley Beal among those who voiced their support for Rendon. Each tweet containing “#VoteRendon” counted as a vote for the third baseman. Fans could have also voted on MLB’s website.
The Nationals will be represented by five players — Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg — for July 11’s All-Star Game in Miami.
Voting for Rendon closed Thursday at 4 p.m.
Rendon has never been named an All-Star in his career, coming close in 2014 before he lost out on the fan vote to Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo.
Rendon has a split of .297/.398/.547 this season with 16 home runs and 51RBIs.
Turner received a record-setting 20.8 million votes, beating out the Chicago Cubs’ Kris Bryant, Rendon, Colorado Rockies’ Mark Reynolds, and the Miami Marlins’ Justin Bour.
The Kansas City Royals’ Mike Moustakas won the American League final roster spot, topping the Boston Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts, New York Yankees’ Didi Gregorius, the Texas Rangers’ Elvis Andrus, and the Tampa Bay Rays’ Logan Morrison.
