Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Logan Morrison had some choice words regarding MLB inviting Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez to the Home Run Derby, insinuating that he should have been invited instead.
“Gary shouldn’t be there,’’ Morrison told the Tampa Bay Times on Tuesday. “Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby.’’
Morrison has put up strong power-hitting numbers this season, already homering a career-best 24 times, tied for third in the majors. Sanchez, meanwhile, has battled injuries much of the year and has hit only 13 home runs in 53 games, after homering 20 times in the same number of games last season.
“I remember when I had 14 home runs,” the Tampa Bay slugger remarked. “That was a month and a half ago.’’
Morrison, who did not make the American League All-Star team but is still in the running to make the roster via the Final Vote, went on to say he “probably” would have participated in the Home Run Derby if he had been invited.
“It’s par for the course. I play for the Rays. I get it. They can’t even get my picture right,” he said. “When they put my name up there they put Corey (Dickerson’s) picture up there … on MLB Network. When they put up the home run leaders they put Corey’s swing on there not mine.’’
Sanchez later responded to Morrison’s comments:
