PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state has painted over a mural on Interstate 95 by a renowned children’s author and illustrator after it was repeatedly defaced.
The Department of Transportation tells The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/2vckQ77 ) it painted over the mural designed by David Macaulay on July 8. Spokesman Charles St. Martin says the mural was “beyond saving” and had become a blight.
The mural was painted in 2013 on a stretch of I-95 not far from the state offices in Providence, and depicted statues of notable people in Rhode Island history.
It was defaced for the first time within a matter of weeks, the first of many times. The DOT kept getting it cleaned each time.
Macaulay, who has won a Caldecott Medal and MacArthur Fellowship, says he’s disappointed but not surprised.
