LOWELL, Vt. (AP) - State police say that a 22-year-old Vermont man died after the ATV he was driving careened down an embankment.

A press release states that driver Nicholas Miller, of Irasburg, Vt., was speeding in the ATV Saturday night when it left the roadway and traveled into the grassy shoulder.

Police say that the ATV then struck several trees down an embankment and ejected Miller, who was not wearing a seatbelt or helmet.

Emergency responders pronounced Miller dead at the scene.

A passenger wearing a seatbelt was transported to North County Hospital with minor injuries.

State police say an investigation is on-going with alcohol and speed appearing to have played a role.
