FLORIDA SET TO RESUME EXECUTIONS AFTER 18-MONTH HIATUS
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is set to resume executions after a hiatus of more than 18 months after the U.S. Supreme court found Florida’s death sentencing procedure was flawed because it allowed judges to reach a different conclusion from juries. Scott rescheduled the execution of Mark Asay for Aug. 24. Asay was originally scheduled to be executed on March 17, 2016, for the 1987 murders of Robert Lee Booker and Robert McDowell in Jacksonville.
FLORIDA WOMAN, NEWBORN RECOVERING FROM LIGHTNING STRIKE
Meghan Davidson was just seven days from her due date when she was struck in the head by a lightning bolt on Thursday while walking with her mother outside her home in Fort Myers. The television station reports doctors later delivered baby Owen, whose condition wasn’t available. The congregation at McGregor Baptist Church held a prayer vigil for Davidson, who has two other children, on Sunday.
FLORIDA OPENS LARGE STRETCH OF GULF COAST FOR SCALLOPING
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission opened an area from St. Vincent Island in Franklin County to the Pasco and Hernando County line to recreational scalloping over the weekend. A recreational salt water fishing license is required to gather bay scallops, and the limit is one pint of scallop meat per person or a half-gallon of scallop meat per boat. Scallopers can gather the mollusks by hand or with a dip net.
FLORIDA TEEN DIES WHEN ATV CRASHES INTO TREES
The crash happened Saturday when 17-year-old Sean Stokes riding on a hard-top dirt road. The Florida Highway Patrol says the boy was not wearing a helmet when his 2004 ATV Yamaha Raptor veered off the road and onto the shoulder before crashing into a group of trees. He was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center with severe head injuries.
FLORIDA GIRL DROWNS DURING JULY 4TH PARTY AT HER HOME
Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials tell local news outlets that people at the party tried to resuscitate Kierra Williams at the scene on Sunday evening, but she was declared dead at a hospital a short time later. Officials say a large house party was going on when the girl drowned. Sheriff’s officials are investigating, but say foul play isn’t suspected.
