WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Weather Service says an unseasonably strong storm system is bringing heavy rain and the threat of severe flooding to the Washington area.

The Sterling, Virginia, office of the weather service has issued a flood warning for the District of Columbia and some suburban areas until midnight Friday.

At 6 p.m., the weather service said up to three inches of rain had already fallen, with isolated areas seeing up to four. The rain is expected to continue into Saturday morning.
