WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia officials and Apple have finalized the terms to bring an Apple store to the historic Carnegie Library in Mount Vernon Square.

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Thursday that Apple and Events DC, the district’s official convention and sports authority, would execute a lease for the store.

A statement from Bowser says Apple will occupy nearly 19,000 square feet of interior space. The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., will continue to operate its museum and library in the building.

The statement says the store’s design is under development. Apple officials have said they plan to restore the building to its original grandeur and make Carnegie a place to hold community events.

Named after the steel tycoon and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library opened in 1903 as the first desegregated building in Washington.
