RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A man accused of killing a Virginia State Police special agent is scheduled to go on trial next year.

News media outlets report that Travis Ball is scheduled to go on trial in October 2018.

Ball is charged with capital murder in the death of 45-year-old Special Agent Michael Walter. Authorities say Ball shot Walter in the head while the officer was patrolling in a Richmond public housing complex. Police say 27-year-old Ball then fled the scene and was arrested after an overnight manhunt.

Walter was an 18-year Virginia State Police veteran and a father of three who previously served in the Marines.

Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Herring has not yet said whether he will pursue the death penalty for Ball.
