AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Republican governor says he’s vetoed bills to raise the age for tobacco sales and ban drivers from holding and using electronic devices while driving.
Gov. Paul LePage on a Tuesday radio appearance said that he used to smoke and believes smoking is the easiest thing to quit in the world. He said a better way to combat distracted driving would be requiring drivers to keep both hands on the wheel.
One bill would raise the age for tobacco sales to 21 from 18 starting next summer. LePage said 18-year-olds should be able to buy cigarettes if they can fight in war.
The other bill would allow use of GPS as well as hands-free use of devices like cellphones.
Lawmakers are set to consider LePage’s vetoes Aug.2.
