BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) - A couple of enterprising land lovers have stopped some traffic with their blooming business venture: cultivating crops on a Long Island front lawn.
The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/2v0kIIb ) says Lawn Island Farms was inspired by the locally sourced food of Rosette Bassima Adams’ native Uganda.
She and her husband, Jim Adams, grow cash crops on other people’s property.
In Bay Shore, they used the homeowner’s front yard because the backyard has a lot of trees.
Resident Cassandra Trimarco, who considers herself “lucky,” enjoys free landscaping plus weekly salad greens, tomatoes and radishes.
The Adamses sell the rest at farmers markets and to a restaurant.
Some neighbors were upset. One shouted that the lawn farm was ruining the neighborhood.
But other residents and passersby love seeing the quirky cultivation.
