ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A new, free health center for unionized hotel workers has opened in New York City.
The New York Hotel Trades Council says the $150 million facility in Brooklyn will offer medical care at no cost to union members and their families, including surgeries, dental care, eye exams and routine medical care. Members will only be responsible for pharmaceutical copays.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio attended a ribbon cutting for the facility on Thursday, though the two men, who have a rocky relationship, were never in the room at the same time.
The union says the facility is made possible by a partnership with the Hotel Association of New York City.
Large unions once commonly ran health centers for their members, but the practice fell out of favor.
