DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A judge has refused to release an impounded dog on a $1,000 bond offered by its owner, who’s fighting the city of Des Moines’ determination that the dog is dangerous.
The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/2tKiEPr ) that the dog, Pinky, has been held by Animal Rescue League of Iowa since March last year, after she attacked a cat. The city declared Pinky dangerous and moved to have her euthanized. In April 2017 a judge affirmed that decision.
Pinky’s owner, Diane Helmers, appealed that ruling on May 24. She says Pinky isn’t dangerous.
While denying Helmers’ request Monday to free Pinky, the judge also denied Des Moines’ request to have Helmers pay $4,200 for Pinky’s care.
City attorney John Haraldson says Pinky’s is his first bond case involving an impounded dog.
