BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Charlie Baker’s nomination of Scott Kafker to the state’s highest court has been confirmed by the Governor’s Council.

The vote Wednesday by the Governor’s Council completes Baker’s extraordinary reshaping of the Supreme Judicial Court during his first 2 ½ years in office.

Kafker is currently the chief justice of the state appeals court. He will join the SJC this fall when associate justice Geraldine Hines reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The Republican previously filled four other vacancies on the seven-member court that resulted from resignations or mandatory retirements. All of his nominations won unanimous approval from the Governor’s Council, an eight-member elected body.

In a statement, Baker called Kafker “a distinguished, experienced and dedicated jurist, who will serve the state with fairness and impartiality.
