STANTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware-based student loan provider Sallie Mae is seeking a multi-million dollar state taxpayer grant to help fund an expansion that would create 285 new, local jobs.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports state officials announced the $2.16 million grant request late Monday afternoon.

Sallie Mae plans to hire the new employees over three years, bringing its total employment in the state to more than 1,030. Most would be customer service positions.

The company says it will spend $4.75 million of its own money on the expansion. The taxpayer grant would be used to offset the salaries of the new employees.

The request will be heard July 24 by the Council on Development Finance, a public body that determines whether the state should give final approval to corporate incentive packages.
