OPINION:
Sen. John McCain’s explanation of his role in obtaining and providing to the FBI copies of the so-called “Trump Dossier” smells very fishy — and without a full explanation, it will fail the smell test.
First, what about the money the senator spent on this? How much was it and what was the breakdown? How much, if anything, did his “trusted aide” receive for services? Was any money paid to anyone for providing the dossier? Finally, where did the money spent come from? Was it personal funds, campaign funds, government funds? We need to know the source of the funds the good senator expended.
Why did Mr. McCain believe it was his responsibility to obtain a copy of the dossier? Why not just report the information to the FBI and let it obtain it with a good chain of evidence? And why did Mr. McCain decide to go to the FBI instead of the Senate Intelligence Committee?
It seems the senator took a lot upon himself, assuming responsibilities that were not his, making judgments that were not his to make and trying to con the public into believing he had nothing but pure motives. If his motives were in fact pure he now has the obligation to prove it.
