COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s prosecutor is celebrating a new system he hopes will provide better services and support to crime victims and their families.
Attorney General Alan Wilson welcomed to his office on Friday representatives from the state’s victim services agencies. A new law that went into effect July 1 moved the agencies under Wilson’s purview.
The consolidation was among the recommendations made by then-Gov. Nikki Haley’s domestic violence task force last year.
Three agencies had been spread out over the greater Columbia area. Now, all of them will be centralized at the attorney general’s office at the Statehouse complex.
Wilson says the change is the most important reform for crime victims in South Carolina since the Victim’s Bill of Rights was added to the state constitution in 1998.
