Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” has dethroned “Gangnam Style” by Psy as the most-watched video on YouTube after garnering nearly 3 billion views and counting.
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was uploaded to YouTube in July 2012 and within six months became the first video to garner over a billion views on the Google-owned platform.
The Korean pop hit had been viewed about 2.895 billion times as of Monday evening when it was surpassed by “See You Again,” a 2015 rap-ballad featured on the soundtrack of “The Fate of the Furious 7.”
“I’m super excited and grateful to everyone who supported the song and video on YouTube, and happy to inspire and impact so many lives,” Khalifa, a 29-year-old Pittsburgh-based rapper, said in a statement.
“See You Again” continued to hold the top spot Tuesday afternoon, boasting a view count of 2.897 billion — about 2 million more than “Gangnam Style.”
“I remember when I signed up for YouTube in 2007 and had hopes of uploading a video and it reaching 10,000 views,” added Charlie Puth, a 25-year-old singer-songwriter featured on the track. “Now a decade later, it feels incredible to be a part of the most-viewed video on YouTube.”
The music video for “See You Again” contains footage of the artists performing interspersed with scenes from the “Fast and the Furious” franchise featuring Paul Walker, an American actor who died in 2013 midway through filming the series’ seventh installment. It’s averaged over three million views per day in 2017 alone, CNN reported Tuesday.
