GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — The death of a 4-month-old girl is under investigation after police say she was reported to be not breathing in a Maryland motel parking lot where she was living with her family.

Montgomery County police said in a statement police and medics called to a Motel 6 Sunday morning found the infant unresponsive. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The infant was identified as Brooklyn Ruth Irby. Police say she was with family members before the call.

Grandfather Michael Dionne tells WJLA-TV his family had been living in the van in the parking lot and his daughter’s applications for housing had been turned down twice. He says Brooklyn was always laughing.

Detectives have labeled Brooklyn’s cause of death undetermined until the medical examiner’s office releases its findings.
