PALMERTON, Pa. (AP) - Striking teachers have canceled classes for hundreds of students in one district in eastern Pennsylvania’s coal country.
The Palmerton Area School District teachers went on strike Monday after a negotiating session on Friday failed to yield a new contract.
The teachers have asked for raises of 3, 4, 4 and 5 percent over four years, but the district is willing to pay 3.25 percent more each year.
The last contract covering 132 teachers, nurses and other employees expired June 30.
A law requiring students to receive 180 days of classroom instruction means the strike can only run through Jan. 19.
The district is about 80 miles northeast of Harrisburg.
