Paul Carey recalled by Capitals from Hershey

The Washington Capitals announced that they have recalled Paul Carey from the Hershey Bears.

The roster move is a result of the two injuries the Capitals suffered Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators. Forward T.J. Oshie missed Sunday’s practice with an upper body injury. Oshie was hit by Senators’ defenseman Dion Phaneuf and appeared to gingerly make his way back to the bench.

After briefly going to the locker room, Oshie would return only to exit the game following a power play in which Oshie took a Phaneuf cross check to the back in the second period.

Forward Tom Wilson is also dealing with a lower body injury. Wilson blocked a shot on the penalty kill before skating back to the bench near the end of the game, hunched over in pain. Wilson would return, but was absent from Sunday’s skate.

This is the second call up for Carey this season. On Nov. 20, Carey was called up and participated in three games. As a member of the Bears, Carey has 10 goals and 15 assists in 28 games this season, good for second on the team in goals scored. Carey also has the AHL’s longest point streak of the season, recording a point in 19-straight games, tied for the third-longest point streak in Hershey history.

Carey joins recent call up Liam O’Brien as the second forward to join the team since Jan. 6. Coach Barry Trotz initially said that the Capitals would recall one forward to provide Washington with a bit of forward depth as they headed on a two-game road trip in Canada.

While cap space has been tight for Washington this season and has resulted in the Capitals carrying a 22-man roster for parts of the year (NHL rosters are allowed a maximum of 23 players), Carey’s $575,000 cap hit and O’Brien’s $621,667 cap hit are more than enough for Washington current cap space. According to Cap Friendly, the Capitals currently have $750,010 in cap space with Carey and O’Brien on the roster.

The Capitals play the Montreal Canadiens at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
