The Pakistani military successfully launched its first submarine launched cruise missile that has nuclear payload capability in a bid to boost deterrence with India.

Both nations have continued to develop, test, and field advanced nuclear delivery systems and have fought three wars since independence from Britain. The missile has a range of 450km and was launched from somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

“Pakistan eyes this hallmark development as a step toward reinforcing the policy of credible minimum deterrence,” said a statement issued by the military. Pakistan has been concerned with the recent progress of Indian missile capability.

The Pakistani military said the Babur-3 missile was “capable of delivering various types of payloads and will provide Pakistan with a Credible Second Strike Capability, augmenting deterrence,” reports Reuters.
