MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The sign out front says “drive thru sushi,” but don’t call Masa a fast food place.
The family that’s setting up the new 2217 E. South Blvd. eatery said they’re aiming higher. Jay Chen, the nephew of Masa manager Troy Zheng, mentioned the Alfa Companies and the Baptist Health campus just down the street and said everyone is in a rush but still wants a good meal.
“Especially in an area like this, the best fit is quality food with fast service,” Chen said. “Not fast food, quality food.”
Among other things, the restaurant cooks in vegetable oil to avoid trans-fat and doesn’t use MSG in the food.
Masa will offer more than sushi. The Japanese and Chinese fusion menu includes Hibachi dishes, Lo Mein, Udon and more. Lunch specials cost about $6, and just about everything on the menu is under $10. There’s even a “South Side” sushi roll (smoked salmon, crab and avocado.)
They also do delivery for any order over $10, and they offer catering for events.
The concept may be quick service, but the owners have taken their time renovating the former KFC spot and resurfacing the parking lot. The week before Christmas, they were finished with the remodel and waiting on final inspections.
Zheng said Masa expects to open “as soon as possible” in January.
It may not be the last location here, either.
“With the population and the environment, we think it’s the best fit to start our chain,” Chen said. “We are hoping to open more of the same restaurant in the area.”
