The NHL announced that Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby has been named the Third Star of the week for the week ending Jan. 8.
In three games, Holtby posted a 2-0-0 record, a 1.29 goals against average, .955 save percentage and two shutouts. In Holtby’s first appearance of the week, the 27-year-old goaltender was pulled after one period after allowing three goals on eight shots to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Holtby then followed that sub-par performance with two shutouts, which were the first consecutive shutouts Holtby has posted in his six-year career.
Holtby is currently third in the NHL in save percentage (.931), second in goals allowed per game (1.93) and tied for first in the NHL in shutouts (five).
The New York Rangers’ Michael Grabner (five goals and two assists this week) and the Edmonton Oilers’ Patrick Maroon (five goals and one assist) were the NHL’s First and Second Stars, respectively.
