TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A federal agency apparently won’t decide before President-elect Donald Trump takes office whether to issue an environmental permit for a major copper mine project planned in southern Arizona.
The Arizona Daily Star (https://goo.gl/S6y8uL ) reports that the Army Corps of Engineers isn’t expected to decide on a Clean Water Act permit for Rosemont Mine until after Jan. 20, when President Barack Obama leaves office.
A low-level Corps of Engineers office last July recommended denial, but spokeswoman Heather Babb says a higher-level office that will make the decision continues to review records.
Law professors Jonathan Adler of Case Western University and Patrick Parenteau of Vermont Law School told the Star that a Trump administration decision likely would be more favorable than one by Obama’s administration but that approval isn’t a sure thing.
